Birth of the Nub
The Nub was born at 7:30 am on the bright,
sun-shiny morning of August 31, 2006. It came into
being due to the collision of two vehicles. One was a
1996 Dodge Stratus, and the other was a 1990
Yamaha XT350 (that is a dual sport motorcycle for
those of you who are unfamiliar with that model) At
the intersection of 19th and Kentucky streets was
where the Nub's was conceived. It was the beginning
of a journey that would result in a ride in an
ambulance, a flight in a medevac helicopter, and an
extended stay in the intensive care unit of the KU
Medical center in Kansas City, KS.
The nub was officially brought into the world after the
course of a second surgery. This surgery resulted in
the amputation of all 5 toes on my left foot just after
the knuckles which join them to the foot, but
thankfully, the ball of the foot was left intact.
Due to the severity of the injuries to my left foot, it
was uncertain how much of the foot would be able to
be saved. If you choose to look at the picture of the
foot before surgery (I call this the pre-Nub), you can
see some of the bones of the foot exposed, and the
big toe is completely gone. In order to try to save the
majority of the foot, the doctors determined all of the
toes would have to go. This was the only option
which gave the entire foot the opportunity to heal as
much as possible. The alternative to this was to
amputate the entire foot just below the knee joint,
and depending on how the foot heals, this is still a
remote possibility.
After meeting with the Doctor on September 14, 2006
there is still some more healing which needs to take
place before much more can be done medically. At the
appointment, they were able to rip some stitches out
of my face(the Nub's face) which was a very painful
process.
